Katie’s memorial CD is a sell-out
Dec 31 2007 by Our Correspondent, Daily Post

WHEN the family of a popular eisteddfod soloist decided to release a CD in her memory little did they realise that demand would exceed all expectations.

Within a matter of days of the Oes o Gan (Lifetime of Song) CD being launched in early December, all 250 copies had been sold.

Now, sales of the CD in memory of soprano Katie Wyn Jones, of Dinas Dinlle, near Caernarfon, are fast approaching 1,000.

Proceeds from the sales go to T Gobaith hospice and St Twrog’s Church, Llandwrog.

“I can only describe the interest as incredible. Sales are now approaching 1,000, after we placed a third order for another 500 with record company Aran”, said daughter Olga Wyn Thomas.

A further order for 500 has now been placed to keep up with demand.

“Mother gained so much joy from music, and from the response to the Daily Post article it soon became clear there are many people out there who were attracted to her very special voice, particularly her hymn solos at eisteddfodau.

“After mother died in March 2005 so many people asked when we would be releasing a CD. In effect our decision was based on obvious public demand.

“On our part the CD has given us so much satisfaction, realising that mother had so many friends. We just did not realise that 1,000 copies would be sold in a matter of four weeks.”

In the passing of Katie Wyn at the age of 84 the eisteddfod scene lost one of its most faithful supporters. She possessed a fine soprano voice, gaining much success as a soloist over many years, first as a child, and then competing throughout her life in eisteddfodau right across north and mid Wales.

The 10 solos include Clyw Ni Fwyn Waredwr, Craig yr Oesoedd, Drosom Ni and Nefol Dad Mae Eto’n Nosi.
